12.3 Health benefits associated with red wine and beer

Alcohol has been associated with a lower risk of coronary heart disease.

Alcoholic beverages may be protective for the following reasons:

  ~ The anti-oxidants may inhibit the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol and, so protect against the build up of plaque in the artery wall.
  ~ The anti-oxidants may also favourably affect the function of the artery wall.
  ~ It increases the concentration of HDL (good) cholesterol.
  ~ Alcohol may facilitate social activity and social activity has been shown to reduce the likelihood of dying early.
