What about dairy products?

Which ones and how much?

Should I avoid dairy products if my blood cholesterol is too high or if I need to lose weight? NO

How many serves should I have daily? TWO
1 serve =
250ml reduced fat (calcium fortified) cow's milk
250ml calcium fortified soy milk
100ml 'light' evaporated milk
200g reduced fat yoghurt
40g low fat yellow cheese e.g Devondale 7

If you prefer higher fat cheeses, it is recommended that such cheeses be limited to 3 times per week.

What if I don't (or rarely) eat dairy products? You will need to include the following foods in your day to ensure an adequate calcium intake:
- calcium enriched soy milk and tofu
- lentils
- dried apricots
- brazil nuts
- almonds
- fish with bones
- calcium enriched breakfast cereals
- dark green leafy vegetables

Consume calcium rich foods between meals
Calcium in food reduces iron and zinc absorption by up to 60% when eaten with iron-containing foods like meat.

Emerging evidence that dairy products may protect against diabetes.
