Know your milks

Look for: low-fat, skim, reduced-fat, light/lite
These are not suitable for pre-school children.

How much calcium do different milks have?
- Whole milk = 1.2mg calcium/ml
- Reduced fat milk (e.g Rev) = 1.4mg/ml
- Reduced fat and calcium enriched through the addition of skim milk powder (e.g Physical) = 1.5mg/ml.

Try using 'light' evaporated milk in tea/coffee
If you dislike/avoid dairy products, but drink milk with coffee/tea, try using light evaporated milk in these beverages to maximise your intake of calcium.
50ml REV= 70mg calcium
50ml light evaporated milk = 140mg calcium

Low fat dairy products that are high in calcium are recommended e.g. physical has 30% more calcium than standard milk. Some lower-fat milks boost their calcium levels by adding extra skim milk powder to thicken it and to give a better consistency. These usually come with 'high calcium' or 'added calcium' claims. These milks also have a higher lactose content, which can be a problem if you are lactose intolerant.
