Toast is more fattening than bread
False. On a slice-for-slice basis there is no difference between the kilojoule content of toast and
bread. Bread and toast, like other foods, can contribute to excess body fat if we overstep our
energy (kilojoule) requirements by eating too much. Toast and bread contain about 250 kilojoules
per slice. However, we usually eat them with kilojoule-increasing supplements. For example, toast
with butter and honey contains about 920 kilojoules, whereas without the butter, toast and honey
only has 620 kilojoules.
Toasting slightly reduces some of the nutrients in bread, but this is unlikely to be of nutritional
significance.
